The Underdog – Friday’s tips

July 30th, 2010 by Steve Hughes RSS Feed for Steve Hughes

A cracking day yesterday with a 49/1 double brought up courtesy of Borderlescott (9/2) and Illustrious Blue (8/1). It will be tough to follow that today, but the two best bets at Goodwood appear to be in the final two races on the card.

JACQUELINE QUEST – 5.15, Goodwood: Though it was sad to see this filly disqualified in the English 1000 Guineas, there was no doubt it was the right decision.  Arguably her wandering under pressure that day was caused by a lack of stamina over 1m and certainly her trainer Henry Cecil was keen to try her back over 7f again.  She gets her chance here and that disqualification means she gets into this race without a penalty.  Although stall one is not ideal, there is a relatively small field, so that should not be a factor and she gets the chance here to show she is a Group 1 quality performer taking on Group 3 level opposition.

Prices: 5-4 – Betfred and Bet365, 11-8 – Skybet

KINGSGATE CHOICE – 5.45, Goodwood: This is one of the fastest 5f courses in the country, however the majority of this field are front runners and there has to be a chance they will take each other on and go too fast.  As a result, I am looking at a proven strong finisher and Kingsgate Choice fits the bill.

Twice a winner over 5f this season on fast, flat tracks, he did not seem suited by the step up to 6f at Newmarket last time.  The return to 5f here seems sensible and he is reunited with Robert Winston who rode him to both of those earlier wins.  He is usually ridden with restraint and those tactics could well pay off given the usual proviso of getting luck in running.

Prices: 11-2 – Bet365 and Skybet

* Kingsgate Choice has been declared a non-runner
